Problem: Setup Locks Up On Blue Screen when Installing or Upgrading Norton AntiVirus 5.0 in Windows 98

When installing or upgrading Norton AntiVirus 5.0 under Windows 98, the setup program locks up (freezes) on the blue Norton AntiVirus setup screen or stops at 100 percent. In some instances you may receive an Invalid Page Fault error.

When pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete you see, “Norton AntiVirus Setup [Not responding].”

Cause: Symantec’s Norton anti-virus 5.0 for Windows 98 is attampting to register and fails to detect a modem Com port.

Solution: To resolve this issue, download the IRAINST.EXE file from the following location or right-click and choose Save As:

Once the download is complete, run the install by double-clicking the file in Windows Explorer, then restart the computer and run the installation for Norton AntiVirus 5.0 again.

IRAINST.EXE is a patch for the web that extracts, installs and registers the following COM servers (Coresdk.014):



  • Detects and updates these files only on Windows 98.
  • Extracts files and launches irains98.exe which updates (copies over and registers) these DLLs irrespective of whether NAV is installed.
  • Creates Symantec Shared folder under common files folder if not already present and copied files into them
  • Does a file version check on the files before it copies them over.
  • At the end of install, it cleans up itself and removes the temporary copies of MSVCRT.DLL and MSVCIRT.DLL that it uses.
  • Displays messages on success/failure (all message are stored in the resource file)
  • Has been created using PFTW (patch for the web utility)
  • Does not modify the usage counts on these DLLs
