Computer Business Consultants CEO, Clinton Pownall, is the South Lake Chamber Education Committee Chairman.  As such, he works to help foster communication and integration of the business community needs with the needs of education offered to the students of Lake County, young and old.  As part of his responsibilities, Clinton is making the community at large aware of a new Lake County Schools Initiative, RUC2Ready (Are you Common Core Ready).

RUC2Ready is a Lake County Schools initiative designed to serve as an awareness for the upcoming migration to Common Core (C2) and was featured at this year’s Lake County Schools’ annual Education Innovations at Leesburg High School on October 16th.  Education Innovations is open to the public and highlights Lake County Schools’ performance of Lake County Schools over the past year.  Educational displays from the Lake County School District’s Career and Technical Education programs, educational booths in the courtyard, and demonstrations showcasing how students are using handheld electronic devices in the classroom, were all featured.

During this year’s Education Innovations, a special presentation and guest speaker Kevin Baird from the Common Core Institute, presented as part of the RUC2Ready initiative.  The Common Core Institute is dedicated to assisting school districts with integrating and implementing Common Core into their district. This is a major undertaking and Lake County Schools would like to put the word out to parents, elected officials, and the business community to help implement and maintain Common Core and encourages them to attend the presentation.

Common Core has been adopted by Florida and 44 other states along with 3 US Territories as the method and standard for teaching and evaluating K-12 students. Common Core in combination the PARCC testing will replace FCAT. PARCC, Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, is s a consortium of 23 states plus the U.S. Virgin Islands working together to develop a common set of K‐12 assessments in English and math anchored in what it takes to be ready for college and careers.

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.
